Getting there from downtown

This is the easiest escape on the list: one freeway, two exits, done. I-90 east climbs gently out of the city into the Cascade foothills; you'll be standing at the falls overlook before your coffee's cold.

  1. Downtown → I-90 East15 mi · ~18 min

From downtown, drop onto I-90 east (via the I-5 interchange or 4th Ave S). Cross Lake Washington on the floating bridge — Mercer Island, then Issaquah.

  2. Exit 25 → Snoqualmie Parkway4 mi · ~7 min

Take exit 25 and follow Snoqualmie Parkway 4 miles north through Snoqualmie Ridge until it ends at WA-202.

  3. WA-202 → the falls1 mi · ~3 min

Right on WA-202 for a mile; the falls parking lots appear on both sides of the road. The free lot on the gift-shop side connects to the overlook by a footbridge.

  4. Falls → downtown Snoqualmie → North Bend5 mi · ~10 min

Backtrack on WA-202 through old-town Snoqualmie (the railway museum's rolling stock lines the road), then continue 4 miles to North Bend.

  5. North Bend → Twin Falls trailhead5 mi · ~10 min

North Bend Way east, right on 468th Ave SE, left on SE 159th St to the Olallie State Park / Twin Falls lot. It fills by 10 AM on weekends.

  6. Home on I-90 West30 mi · ~35 min

Re-enter at exit 34; downtown is 30 miles of downhill freeway away.

Worth stopping for

Snoqualmie Falls overlook

A 268-foot plunge (higher than Niagara) with a free clifftop boardwalk, upper park, and gift shop. The lower river-level trail reopens views from below — 1.4 mi round trip.

Downtown Snoqualmie & Railway Museum

A main street lined with century-old rolling stock; the Northwest Railway Museum runs weekend excursion trains in summer.

Map

Twin Falls / Olallie State Park

The best short forest hike off I-90: river the whole way, old-growth stumps, and a wooden bridge slung between the upper and lower falls. Discover Pass at the lot.

Map

North Bend

Twin Peaks' real-world main street with Mount Si looming 4,000 feet straight up behind it. Good outfitter, bakery, and diner stops.

Map

Rattlesnake Lake

Flat, pretty shoreline loop and the region's most famous (and most crowded) ledge hike above it. Lake shoreline is the saner dog option.

Map

With the dog

Excellent half-day dog outing — forest shade, river smells, moderate mileage. Leash at every stop.

Fast, cold water everywhere — keep the dog out of the river above both falls. Wet roots and drop-offs on the Twin Falls trail; the final viewpoints are railed but exposed.

Passes, parking & costs

  • Snoqualmie Falls: free, including parking (the two lots flank WA-202).
  • Twin Falls: Discover Pass ($10 day / $30 annual) at the Olallie State Park lot.
  • No tolls on I-90 east of Seattle.

Timing & conditions

The falls are at their loudest in early summer; by late July the flow is gentler but the spray rainbow shows up on sunny mornings around 9–10 AM.

This is the trip to keep in your back pocket for the iffy-weather day — everything works in drizzle, and the forest hike is arguably better in it.

Weekend crowds arrive at the falls by 10 and at Twin Falls' small lot by 9:30. Monday morning (as planned) you'll have both nearly alone.
